Literacy is a skill that allows you process, transfer, understand, connect, translate information that you view/read/hear. LIteracies are genres in which information is presented, each with their own set of conventions.
When we talk about someone who is literate we are talking about the ability to read information at a base level, decoding the words.
When we talk about literacy in general we are talking about a hierarchy of skills. At the entry level it is simply symbol decoding, but upon that we develop additional layers. These layers include the ability to make meaning out of what you have read, as well as communicating this information to others.
When we talk about literacies we are talking not just about reading text, but other medias such as video, web, audio, etc.

We believe literacy is the skill set you have to make meaning and communicate with the world around you.
Science literacy includes investigating, summarizing, reviewing, making judgements, collecting evidence and reflecting on/changing understandings.
